Linkmas Eve

Reverse Shot on Annie Hall and the Film Forum Woody Allen retrospective.
YouTube "Scary Mary" Mary Poppins recut. [thx, Vince]
Low Resolution Joe Reid's annual airing of grievances: a fine tradition.
Stale Popcorn wishes you a merry one...
Movie Blog with that Silver Surfer image making the rounds. I'm unimpressed too. Looks like someone just hit a chrome filter on photoshop or sumthin'

and some lists!
Reel Fanatic "10 Scenes That Lingered..."
Modern Fabulousity to unleash a week long 'best of the year' blitz
NY Times or "The Paper of Eastwood Worship" A.O. Scott even calls him "the greatest living American filmmaker". You know last time I checked Woody Allen, Terrence Malick, Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg, and David Lynch were all still alive. Among others. So, whatever.
IMDB "Top 25 Celebrities of 2006" This list is based on database searches. These kinda lists are both fascinating and highly disturbing. My girls (the ones I sometimes hate myself for loving) ScarJo and LiLo are way up there. Jake Gyllenhaal is much lower than I'd anticipated. And I have to ask: why on earth are people still searching for info on Tom Hanks in 2006? Get over it! [src]

Jake was less hot this year than Emma Watson, Hillary Duff, Kate Beckinsale, Jessica Alba and Paris Hilton???
How is that even possible? That is not possible. I guess Jake wasn't actually in a movie this year, but neither were most of the others, and January through March he was EVERYWHERE.

I haven't even thought about most of those people this year. Not even once. Seriously.

Do you think the obsessive Eastwood praise could hurt him this year? I mean, I like Clint, but the greatest living American director? Really? Come on now.

I don't think the obsession could hurt Eastwood, anymore than the backlash against Eastwood would help him.

Let's see...Kate Beckinsale was in two movies this year, one of which included a vampire threesome.

Jessica Alba's turning into a bobblehead now, so maybe people were looking for earlier movies and TV shows where she was more voluptuous.

Paris Hilton had her CD and some direct-to-DVD movies in 2006, plus the DUI and the late-run friendship with post-Kevin Britney. That kept her in the public eye as much as ever, if nothing else.

Hilary Duff...hmmm...looking it up...Material Girls flopped, but she's still looking thin, those ugly veneers haven't gone away, she was quoted as saying she was a virgin earlier this year despite going out with an older guy for two years, she was a Sims character, she broke up with said boyfriend after two years and had a stalker. That's enough to give her fans and detractors plenty to discuss on her IMDb message boards.

In the same vein, Emma Watson was embroiled in something of a scandal among Potter fans when private photos of her drinking and partying were leaked online over the course of several months. The photos, and talk about them, were banned from the "official" Potter fan sites, so the IMDb boards would have been a place for links/discussion. Not to be gross or anything, but she also turned 16 this year (legal in the UK), and that probably caused a spike in searches from a certain segment of her admirers looking up her exact birthday. Goblet of Fire hit DVD and later cable in 2006. Her acting in that movie was certainly...noticeable, for better or worse, and people would want to discuss it with others. For the second year running, she and Daniel Radcliffe made this IMDb hot list, but not Rupert Grint. Among some Potter fans, there's a bit of a "Rupert versus the other two" undercurrent, and this development, inconsequential though it may be, only reinforces it.
