Warner Bros' Bitch

As y'all know on my last day of vacation before the awards season steamroll, the NBR -- that 95 year old relic on the fringes of the motion picture industry-- announced their awards. If you've been waiting for some sweet milk from Warner Bros behemoth corporate bosom, get in line. NBR is planning to suck until well into 2007. [yes i'm aware the WB a good year but geez louise, just look at their prizes -ed]

Here are my thoughts. (If I'm repeating anyone else's take, forgive. I'm a day late and I haven't been on the net much for a week) Feel free to leave yours in the comments.

Yeah, the NBR were strange this year (even moreso than usual) but ya gotta give props to an organisation that exists purely so the members can mingle with celebs.

Right?

Blood Diamond?!??! wtf?

at least Bobby wasn't in the Best pic lineup.

I'm worried that Whitaker will be left off the Oscar shortlist, possibly in favor of the less talented Will Smith, hope i'm wrong.

Anonymous said...

I don't think it's an either/or proposition, anonymous. I think Smith and Whitaker could both make it an surprise no one.

They really love Ed Zwick, don't they?

adam k. said...

Of course Whitaker and Smith will both make it.

There is no "one black per category" rule.

hmm, even the Grammy Nominations announced today are alot better than the NBR's winners. Gnarls Barkley, Timberlake, Red Hot Chili Peppers all up for Album of the Year! doh, but then they had to go and ruin it by nominating John Mayer! =)

I dunno, I feel like O'Hara might make it, since the category is so up-in-the-air. I am imagining (I could be wrong) that she's actually benefiting from FYC's being disappointing, because she's the only good thing people remember about the film, and then it gets them thinking "yeah, she's kind of ALWAYS great in these movies, isn't she?"

And I agree wholeheartedly with WTC being about the worst possible choice for "freedom of expression." Give it to Shortbus or The Lives of Others or something. Why WTC??? The mind boggles.

Um Adam K, sorry I wasn't trying to imply there was such a ridiculous rule, I guess my post didn't come off the right way. I'm just worried that Whitaker's performance will be left off in favor of a less deserving one, I didn't mean it to sound racist or anything. geez.

Excellent point on Scorsese. I'm also bored to death by Mirren and her film already, and the season hasn't even started yet.

What I'm most looking forward to find out this season...

* Letters of Iwo Jima first American foreign-language film in BP?

* Who's getting the 5th director slot (Almodovar, Cuaron, Iñarritu, Tykwer, Greengrass, Lynch?!?)

* 5th Best Actress slot

* O'Hara, Maura, and Kikuchi battling it out for the remaining slots in Supporting Actress.

* Some weird ass foreign film in Screenplay OTHER than Volver.

In response to Javierag,
I think Cuaron could definetely get the nod, should "Children of Men" turn out to be a massive hit (and I'm expecting it will). Inarritu may find himself to be the lone director, (a sign that the Academy indeed loved the picture, but couldn't honor it anywhere else).
Honestly, I'm thinking Almodovar. 'Volver' is easily one of the best pictures of the year, a majestic tale featuring an ensemble cast of women that just sparkle.
And Penelope Cruz gives the best female performance I've seen this year.
Aside from the Mirren, of course,

(but it's getting very tired very quickly having to acknowledge her brilliance. Yes, she's phenomenal, but she had a public figure to go off of. Hopefully one of these days they'll actually award a performer who brings their character to life from scratch. ...probably not anytime soon though. Benicio Del Toro and Zooey Deschanel were pretty much guaranteed noms when they signed for their respective roles.)

Anonymous, I didn't mean to imply that you were racist... perhaps if anything that you were accusing the academy of being racist (for not wanting to nominate multiple black actors).

Really it's just that practically everyone is calling BOTH Whitaker and Smith locks, so there's no reason to assume only one would make it unless it is a race-oriented thing. But of course they've nominate two blacks in one best actor lineup twice already this decade (and both times, one of them won; could happen again this year).

To be fair to Scorsese though, I think his IS the best directed film of the year. Haven't seen Pan's Labyrinth, Children of Men, etc, but among the Oscar players, I think he would be the most deserving candidate.

There's no way in hell Lynch will be nominated this year. No chance. No with that film. Might be too, way too avant-garde for AMPAS.

I'm happy for Marty's win. Yey!

I don't understand you, you people. What is exactly wrong with John Mayer? He is a good songwriter, and owns a great voice! Who were you expeting? Christina with her "I'm white but I wanna be black so bad!" album?! Geez!

no he's not, and no he doesn't. sorry. :-)

I'll tell you later what his amazing voice and do for my girlfriend an me...

Mayer is a good songwriter and Aguilera has one of the best voices in pop music.

I see Babel with many nominations, including best director.

Craig Hickman said...

Who is John Mayer?

And Adam K, after three decades passed without a lead Black actor winning, there've been two already this decade.

Who woulda thunk it?

Anonymous said...

But what about the black actresses? There is a topic I could talk about for days.

Paxton Hernandez said...

I can also see Babel getting a lot of nominations or... none. We'll see how that goes.

It's funny how since the Short Season began back in 2003, the 5 nominees from the DGA to Best Director have had their films in the Best Picture Oscar line-up. It's been 100% for 3 year in a row! Beat that you NBR and HFPA star ass-kissers!

“The Phillip Seymour Hoffman style steamroll begins.”

That got quite the chuckle out of me. Just seeing Mirren’s picture above your comments with that look- as if just daring some babe with a last minute deglam to threaten her lock on the gold.

But does it really have to be labeled a PHS style steamroller? Seeing as how to (despite winning all the other majors) Hoffman still lost the most prestigious critic award to Heath Ledger.

I prefer to think of Mirren’s inevitable sweep as more of a Witherspoon steamroller or something like that. It's just as funny and doesn’t evoke that after- cringe which PHS does.

And after all this, watch Mirren lose the NYCC. Ahhh, boy. Award Season has certainly begun.

I doubt it'll be a big hit. I see a $50mil wall at most. It's too dark to get much further. Think of all the Blade Runner or Dark City type films.

I had to review John Mayer's Continuum album for the publication I write for and... well... er... it ain't good.

douglas said...

i disagree, i think continuum is one of the best albums of 2006

Craig Hickman said...

Damian, I could go there with you on the Black actresses.

adam k. said...

Yeah I think O'Hara could nab one of those open spots. Nomming a highly respected overdue actor who's best in show (no pun intended) in her movie is a good way to fill out a lineup.

Also, she seems likely to keep garnering critics awards, I think. The other "likelies" Hudson, Breslin and Blanchett don't seem like the type to win critics' awards. I think it will be O'Hara, Kikuchi and Barraza, and possibly some Phyllis Sommerville, too.

Right now I see Hudson/Breslin/Blanchett/O'Hara/Farmiga, with Kikuchi and Barazza eating away at each other in 6th and 7th. But it is of course way too early to tell. Breslin for example might not be as much of a factor as we all think (though it's hard to imagine her not being nommed if Little Miss Sunshine makes best picture).

adam k. said...

Oh, I suppose Maura could become a critical favorite, too. It'd be nice anyway.

Having read the Stranger than Fiction screenplay for a screenwriting class I can say, despite the horrible casting (Will Ferrell) and the mediocre film adaptation, the screenplay was hands down the best screenplay I read all semester and is very deserving of any awards it gets. Sometimes so-so movies have great award-worthy screenplays.
